Pacific Madrone

Arbutus menziesii

Drier forest of Western Oregon

This exotic-looking tree stands out in our needly, green coniferous Pacific Northwest forests. Its smooth, thin, reddish-brown to orange bark is ever peeling, revealing light green or yellowish new bark. Leaves are shiny, leathery and always green, making this tree a patch of bright color in the forest in the middle of winter.
