Oregon Myrtle
Umbellularia californica
Janka | 1270
Southwest Oregon
Native only to the southwestern coastal areas of Oregon, Myrtle is a unique tree. Its genus has only one species. When the shiny evergreen leaves are bruised, they give off a powerful scent of camphor. The golden spike that finished the transcontinental railroad was pounded into a railroad tie of polished myrtlewood.
